What am I working on?

THE SON OF EL MORRO is a 98,000-word historical adventure-romance set in underrepresented 17th-century San Juan, Puerto Rico. Blending propulsive, high-stakes maritime danger with a slow-burn romance, it explores identity, honor, and the cost of vulnerability. It will appeal to readers who enjoy the adventurous sweep of Rachel Rueckert’s If the Tide Turns and the upmarket historical storytelling of Kristin Harmel’s The Book of Lost Names. THE SON OF EL MORRO is a stand-alone with series potential. Early readers have praised its originality; one former English teacher said, “Never in a million years did I imagine I’d be reading a pirate story set in Puerto Rico — but it worked for me!”

I was inspired to write THE SON OF EL MORRO after researching the grand fortress in San Juan and imagining a soldier’s life and struggle with identity in the midst of colonial tension and piracy.

While THE SON OF EL MORRO centers on Diego’s struggle with identity, three pivotal women shape the course of his life, adding complexity that explores motherhood, female resilience, and young love in a time that was often unforgiving to women—elements that lend themselves well to book club discussion.

I have a lot of lofty goals for this book – one simply to see it published. Eventually, though, with the right support, I would love to see it translated into Spanish and sitting on the shelves of book stores in Old San Juan and the formidable fortress El Morro.
